Tips for EPON and GPON OLT

Here are some tips to help you select and deploy the right OLT:

Understand Your Bandwidth Needs

If most of your users only use the internet for browsing and YouTube, an EPON OLT may be sufficient. If you plan to stream 4K videos or use cloud services, choose GPON.

Count the Number of Users per Port

Don't overload an OLT port with users. Even if GPON supports 128 users per port, splitting it into 32-64 users will improve performance.

Use the Right ONU

Make sure your ONU device matches the OLT type (EPON vs. EPON, GPON vs. GPON). If possible, purchase both from the same vendor to avoid compatibility issues.

Plan the Fiber Length and Signal Loss

Consider the distance between the OLT and end users and the number of splitters. Check your power budget and use the appropriate optical transceivers (SFPs).
